Thanks to GB Mark, the Consumerist, and Huffington Post (original content), I am now aware that bananas can be used to shine shoes.
And the picture? It's a banana hanger. One of my friends in high school had one at his house, and when I found out that this object's sole purpose was to hold bananas I about died laughing.
I don't know why I find banana hangers so funny, but I do.

Let me tell you why they're funny:
1) Why do you need an object that only performs one function and takes up so much space?
2) The function it performs is to help the bananas last longer by not letting their ripening gases get concentrated and making them rot. But the same thing can be achieved by simply separating the bananas and laying them on the counter.
3) Banana hanger sounds too much like "banana hammock," which makes me giggle.
